Sometimes, temporary air conditioning isn’t cost-effective. Trying to cool a factory or warehouse? Hosting a wedding or outdoor event? In these circumstances, air conditioning may not be the best option. But that doesn’t mean you have to sweat it out!

A swamp cooler is a great alternative.

Swamp coolers take on a few different names. They are also called evaporative coolers, wet air coolers, or desert coolers. They utilize the natural cooling properties of water vapor to lower the air temperature.

How Swamp Coolers Work

Swamp coolers are basically square structures with a fan on one side and a cellulose pad on the other. A pump circulates water from the reservoir to make the cellulose pad wet. The fan draws air from outside the unit through the moistened pad, then out into your space. Due to evaporation, a swamp cooler can make the air 10-15 degrees cooler. That can make a huge impact on your employees or guests.

Installation is a snap. Evaporative coolers come on wheels and are easy to move. They are plugged into a standard electrical outlet. The water comes from an easy hose hook up or by filling the water reservoir.

As a result of their cooling process, swamp coolers do add humidity to the air. Although they are designed for the dry heat of desert climates like Arizona, it does not mean that they can’t work in the Northeast as an alternative to air conditioning. Plus, the air is much fresher than the air blowing from a typical air conditioning unit.

Concerned that evaporative coolers will make a big, wet mess? Don’t be! Although water is used for cooling, do not confuse these units with misting fans! Evaporative coolers don’t create mist and don’t get things or people wet. All the water is contained within the unit’s reservoir.
